Inflating the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons is one of the great New York events to experience during the holidays. You can watch Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and the whole gang all come to (bigger than) life right before your very eyes – not to mention the more recent additions of SpongeBob, Hello Kitty and Shrek.
The excitement begins around 4pm on Thanksgiving eve and can be enjoyed throughout the evening, until about 10pm. The place to observe this spectacular event is on 77th through 81st Streets, between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue.
After you zig zag up and down the streets looking for your favorite stories high balloon character, drop into one of the great Upper West Side neighborhood cafés, restaurants or diners along Columbus Avenue, Amsterdam Avenue, or Broadway. Insider recommendation – Magnolia’s Bakery, of Sex and the City fame that made standing in line for cup cakes fashionable, recently opened a store on Columbus Avenue and 69th Street. Though famous for their cup cakes, personally, I always go for the large banana pudding (if you like lots of cookie in your banana pudding, then this is the place!). Magnolia’s new bakery, unlike the original in the Village, has indoor seating and, yes, also has lines – it’s a good sign!
